It’s high time to plug in a good word for Jacky ! After all, on the eve of his 70th birthday, the greatest Belgian racing driver deserves three cheers. For he has won eight Formula 1 Grand Prix, six times the 24 Hours of Le Mans and been at the centre of innumerable exploits in rally raid races and other disciplines, such as cycling. He came through the deadliest period of automobile sports, not wholly unscathed, but with panache and talent. Being born on 1st January, 1945 predestined him to be a hero in times of peace; it was meant to be.
Des bougies pour Jacky ! À la veille de son 70e anniversaire, le plus grand champion automobile belge mérite bien un hommage. Il a gagné huit Grand Prix de Formule 1, remporté six fois les 24 Heures du Mans et l’on ne compte plus ses exploits en rallye-raid ou dans d’autres disciplines, comme le vélo. Il a traversé la période la plus meurtrière du sport automobile, non sans drames, mais avec panache et talent. À croire que naître le 1er janvier 1945 le prédestinait à devenir un héros de temps de paix.
